Yeah I recently installed an SSD too, and it was running hot whilst it indexed the drive and setting up, especially when I was syncing iCloud Photos it got really hot and had very high CPU usage for a day.

If it's still running hot after 24-48 hours of use, then I'd suspect another issue.

If you’ve tried the forced reboot and it still wont’ come back, make an appointment at your local apple store or authorized service provider and have them check it out.

OK, sort of answering my own question here.  It seems that I need to disconnect the keyboard as soon as I enter the Open Firmware command to boot from the ASD 2.6.3 CD.  When I do that, I get a working mouse and cursor.

if you can use a new HD to store data then anything that is not the OS or an Application I would suggest using off that drive. Drives are very inexpensive and if yours is 8 years old it's living on borrowed time.

Ideally I would suggest replacing the rotational drive in your Mac with an SSD that would accommodate your OS and your applications and have an equal or larger number of free space when you finished (~256/512GB). Your data could be moved to a rotational external hard drive (1/2 TB) and a 3rd drive double the size of the external (2/4TB)

if you currently have a 1TB TM drive I would get a 2/4TB drive, migrate your current backup to that and use the older 1TB drive as your data drive. If it fails you have all your data on a newer HD. The SSD for system and apps only would breathe new life into that system as far as response, it would be faster than when you bought it.

My $0.02

is there a clear program I can use that won't hurt it.

NO!

Do not add anything that claims to clean or clear, they will make the problem MUCH worse, possibly even unusable.

Use this little non-invasive Discovery utility, to produce a report of what your Mac is doing. If the problem is not obvious (and often it is not) Paste the report to a reply on the forums, and Readers will fall all over each other to help you make your Mac faster in a thoughtful way, NOT by using a hand grenade (cleaning program).

User Tip: Using Etrecheck

3rd Party Preference Panes:

    Flash Player (installed 2017-12-14) [Lookup]

    Rapport (installed 2012-04-25) [Lookup] <<<<<

Rapport has never worked properly on Macs in spite of what appear to be honest efforts on the part of the developer to cure its ills. Plus your version will be six years old soon. Completely remove it using the developer's instructions here:

http://www.trusteer.com/en/support/uninstalling-rapport

Adding more RAM might be appropriate but, at the time of the test, your iMac was not starved for RAM. Therefore adding RAM will not miraculously make your computer twice as fast. Yours can hold up to 32GB RAM but I suspect adding two 2GB modules (to make a total installed of 8GB) might help a little. We have an iMac and a MacBook Pro of the same time period as yours but with slightly slower 2.5ghz i5 processors. They have no issues running well with High Sierra and 8GB RAM.
