A friend at work helped me with this issue. Turns out I merely needed to uncheck the "Use F1, F2, etc. keys ..." box in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard (see screenshot).

Under watchOS 4.x, the Now Playing app can be configured to be shown automatically on Apple Watch upon raising your wrist when playing supported media on your iPhone. This is the default setting.

To turn this feature off:

• On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Wake Screen > turn off Auto-Launch Audio Apps.

You can search how to do it long and tediously for the mackeeper but I'd first try

MalwareBytes.

If you type the letter “i” and it autocorrects to an “A” with a symbol - Apple Support

Might be. Quit Safari. Try opening Applications/Utilities/Terminal. Copy and paste the below into Terminal. Be careful not to add any spaces. Then hit return.

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1

Reopen Safari and Debug should show in the menu bar. Under that menu, go to Media Flags and make sure nothing is checked.

The issue has been USB Bus Power.

Most simple drives still require about 800 milliAmps or more, well over the standard 500 milliAmps provided by standard USB ports. Fiddling around with several sets of settings on certain MacBooks allows them to provide more power on that port, and allows them to expect an Apple external USB DVD Reader.

I use a drive in an external, self-powered enclosure. No configuration is required.
