None of your explorations, formats or cleanings have influenced this. That vm thing is a Virtual Memory file that was added with APFS with High Sierra.

Your logs show that a process that is supposed to keep it awake, fell asleep (actually, died).

Time Machine's "claim to fame" is that it is the backup that gets done, because it works at low priority in the background. If you are waiting until your Mac is not busy, like the end of the day, firing off this backup and walking away, you are getting caught by a possible Bug (or side effect of something else you have added to your system) that is making this keep-awake process die.

Your second backup should be trivial. It should finish very quickly, and not run into this problem. but you may need to, as a work around, start this first Backup when your Mac is likely to be busy for the next two hours for more, to keep it awake.

If you wish to continue to debug, you could restart into Safe Mode (hold shift at startup), and run the backup from Safe Mode.

Exempt that disk in Time Machine preferences. Be sure your backup partition is at least 2-3 times the size of the disk(s) backed up. Best practice is to have a single drive dedicated to the backup. You may lose the other partition should your drive fail.

How did you effect the data transfer? The proper way is to clone the old drive to the new one using Disk Utility. Another proper way is to install the new drive as the Time Machine backup drive then run a fresh Time Machine backup to this new drive. I'm guessing you did not do either, right?

I doubt it since TM has a special way of saving backups. If you want a second backup get another external hard drive and backup to that. Or use a clone. You can use a cloning software like SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner.

The advantage of the clone is that you can boot into and use the system. So, if your hard drive fails you can just boot from the backup and keep on working until you have the time to repair or replace the internal drive. You can also drag and drop files with the clone because it is the identical file structure on your primary drive.

The advantage of TM is that it creates recursive backups, so you can restore a file or the entire drive from a certain point in time.

FWIW, I use a four-way backup strategy:

  1. Incremental backups. I use Time Machine for this.
  2. Full clone backups. I use Carbon Copy Cloner for this.
  3. Rotate backup drives and store, at least, one copy off-site.
  4. Cloud backups.

Yes, however use the second HD to create a bootable clone using either SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner. Much wiser than having 2 Time Machine backups.
