Install gfxCardStatus (Show all »

Install gfxCardStatus (https://gfx.io) and set it to "i" (integrated graphics only). It will allow your MacBook Pro to run on integrated graphics only, bypassing the discrete GPU which has the issues. This may allow your MacBook Pro to run normally, although it will have reduced graphics performance when performing demanding graphics tasks, and does NOT support external displays The alternative is replacing the logic board, which is not cost effective on a machine that old, unless gfx does not resolve the issue and you really want to keep this MBP.

There is an acknowledged deficiency with later versions of MacOS in the current version of Cody Kreiger's Open-Source gfxcardstatus, and the developer has confessed he does not have time to fix it right now.

There is a fork off the main build by steveschow available that seems to fix that problem for current versions of MacOS such as ElCapitan and Sierra. He provides a finished .app for direct download -- you do not have to compile anything.

https://github.com/steveschow/gfxCardStatus/releases

Also note that if your Mac does not run long enough to allow gfxcardstatus to be added, this is not really practical.

In addition, Steve Schow writes that he has abandoned further development -- because there are better solutions available [for both the 2010 model and 2011 models]. In particular, the use of ArchLinux bootable CD to gain access to and re-write the EFI on the drive, and permanently disable the discrete graphics chip. This page and scroll down past the list to the blog:

Releases · steveschow/gfxCardStatus · GitHub

there are two similar procedure listed. I used the second from MacRumors as it seemed easier. I have made the Arch Linux bootable CD on another Mac, and tried this approach.  I now have a perfectly-functioning MacBook Pro late 2011 15-in model with Discrete Graphics disabled. Runs just fine.

Since High Sierra pretty much forces you to enable iCloud before you complete the installation I have a feeling that is trying to back everything up over wi-fi....makes no sense...I have 200GB of data. There should be more warnings from Apple before setting iCloud as part of the installation.

If the panics persist remove the third party ram and test with just the factory ram.

Disconnect all third party devices and test with just the Apple devices that it shipped with.

I found the fix: it was as simple as removing the username from the share configurations in AutoMounter. When you configure a share in AutoMounter, you may (don't have to) enter a username for authentication. If you don't enter one, you simply enter it when you are asked for the password, if it has never been entered (in the password prompts I received so many times).

I had a username in the configuration all the time, but for some reason, this became a problem after the security update. I read here (https://eclecticlight.co/2018/01/24/what-is-in-the-sierra-security-update-2018-0 01/) that the security update made changes to Keychain Access.

The hint came from the developer, by the way. So I didn't really find the fix myself Glad I received the hint though, I would have probably never thought of that.

Thanks to every who tried to help anyway, I really appreciate it

Possible Fixes for El Capitan or Later

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, restart the computer.
  2. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  3. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  4. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
  5. Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.  Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  6. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button under Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  7. Download and install the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update or 10.12.6 Combo Update or macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 Combo Update as needed.
  8. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  9. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
