You don't need to go to Disk Utility at all unless the macOS installer says that it can't install the OS.

Your disk should already be correctly formatted and the problem that caused your current situation doesn't appear to have anything to do with disk corruption. Plus, you really don't want to erase the disk, or you'll lose all the user data, so just go right ahead and try to reinstall.

If you do get an error message from the installer after doing that, go to Disk Utility and take the option to try to repair the disk rather than erase it.

It will make a copy of the entire .dmg, but won't necessarily delete the previous version(s).  Time Machine keeps many older versions (until it runs out of space).

When you modify a small file, the .dmg is changed in at least two places: the file itself, and the directory area in the .dmg.

To avoid the 4GB copy for each small change, use a Segmented Disk Image:

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/44786/what-are-dmgpart-files-and-what- tools-can-create-merge-or-manage-them

This divides the .dmg into many segments, and only changed segments are copied by Time Machine.

Depends on your level of comfort with your privacy.

I'd personally just remove the hard drive, reset the SMC, and donate it with the drive bracket/screws.  Also provide the original install discs or a retail copy of Snow Leopard if the machine is older than Snow Leopard.  Whoever gets it could spend $40 on a new hard drive and maybe train someone on how to load an operating system.

Instructions for how to remove a hard drive are on the web.

Thank you so much,

not sure if it is updating or not but now I can at lest see my backup files which I couldn't before. Tomorrow I shall try to restore my photo library using the back up machine.

In the Finder app on your iMac select iCloud Drive on the left side bar. Then find whatever files you need to save locally and copy them to a different location on your iMac where you want to save files going forward. Once you have them all moved you can delete them from the iCloud Drive folder on your Mac, delete them from iCloud Drive at iCloud.com, or delete them using the files app on your mobile device.

Ideally you would have things set up so that starting iTunes with the external offline doesn't cause you any problems, and you would have a backup of your iTunes library and other important data on another drive. Syncing your iPod has no impact on the files on your computer. You add songs to your iTunes library. Whether or not you then add them to the iPod won't change how much storage is being used on the internal and external drives.

Check under iTunes (Mac) or Edit (Win) > Preferences > Advanced and look at the location of the media folder. Is where you think it should be on the external drive or has it been reset to the internal drive? If it is wrong change it back to your preferred location, consolidate the library (File > Library > Consolidate Files), then delete the now redundant media folder on the internal drive.

You have shown your local Library contents in your home directory which would not have a CoreServices folder. The Jar Launcher is in /System/Library/CoreServices.

Click once on your Desktop to switch to Finder. Press shift+command+G to pop open the Go to Folder panel, and copy/paste the following:

/System/Library/CoreServices

This is just a look visit, and do not change anything. Jar Launcher should be in CoreServices.
