I ended up calling Apple for technical assistance.  The thing that worked was shutting down and restarting while holding down the space bar.  Once the apple logo appeared I let go and waited.  The screen then came up and I went to utilities which opened a window showing a number of options the bottom one was Disk First Aid.  I ten went through that to repair the hard drive on the computer -- first the physical drive then the drive as named on my usual desktop.  This took quite a while, but it did resolve the issue and returned me to the way things were before I tried to do the install.  Apple tech support was very good and patient while I did this and was reached during their normal open hours without cost.

If you don't have a backup, your data might be gone but it's hard to tell what exactly has happened from your description.

You might be seeing the utilities screen as shown on the linked page here … at any rate, you should be able to get your Mac back up and running with Recovery:

Hi, Vinalbany.

I see that approximately 600 contacts have disappeared from your iMac. I'm happy to help.

Get help using iCloud Contacts, Calendars, or Reminders -- If you're syncing Contacts across devices using iCloud, follow the steps in this article.

How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac -- If you have a Time Machine backup of your iMac, follow the steps in this article to restore your contacts.

Let me know how that goes.

Take care!
