Hello!

You may have to update your Mac to a newer firmware, however, I can understand if you don’t wish to do that.

On older devices, if you type in the Two-Factor Authenticaction Password/Code AFTER the Apple ID passcode, that how you use Two Factor Authentication on older devices.

e.g. Let‘s say your Apple ID Password is “Apple” and let’s say your Two-Factor Authentication Code is “199456”, then when you type in your password onto your older Mac, and it asks for two-factor authentication, you will type “Apple199456” as your password.

I hope this helps, and if you have any questions, let me know!

Have a great day!

I'd expect your Mac hard drive to be shown in the left pane, usually named Macintosh HD.

I'm rusty on the exact layout of Snow Leopard Disk Utility, but selecting it should show some information on the right, including the filesystem type. I think there was a get info button for more detail. Perhaps take screenshots of what you see there, of all items listed in the left pane.

Hello Michael, sorry for taking ages to respond!

Well, the replacement DVD arrived and this is what happened. I have 2 hard drives in my G5. The one which has Tiger is called Untitled, and this is the one that has been giving my trouble as described above. Basically, I couldn't install the replacement DVD and update Tiger on this drive - same problems with the DVD verification stage not completing and telling me to clean my DVD etc.

Anyway, I thought I would have a go at installing the replacement DVD on to my second drive, called Spare, as I don't think there was any system software actually installed on this one. This time though, when it got to the verification stage, I skipped it, and success!! It actually installed and so I have Leopard back again, but on a different hard drive! So now I have one hard drive with Tiger and one with Leopard. Only trouble is that my design software was installed in the Tiger drive (Untitled), so when I try and open them in the Leopard drive (Spare), they won't! So, I'll have to reinstall them on the Leopard drive I guess.

I don't understand why I can't update Tiger with this replacement DVD, I haven't tried skipping the DVD verification stage yet on the Untitled drive, perhaps it would update if I tried that. I  may give that a shot as soon as I've got my design software on the Leopard drive. I'm assuming if the Untitled drive (with Tiger) screws up during another installation attempt, the other hard drive with Leopard should be unaffected?

Thanks for reading!

Adam

You can either use cloning software (e.g., CarbonCopyCloner) to clone the entire drive to the external drive, or you can boot from your Snow Leopard installer disc and install Snow Leopard to the external drive.

Leopard OS 10.5 is no longer supported by Apple. Try obtaining a copy of the install DVD from eBay or Amazon.

If your Mac came with Leopard originally there is one possibility:

If you are in the US call Apple Customer Support 1-800-275-2273, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).

The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.

SOLVED. I didn't get any advice, but want to share this in case anyone else in a similar situation. Even though Snow Leopard couldn't be installed from DVD or homemade USB installer, I was able to find a Mountain Lion disk image online. After "restoring" it to a USB flashdrive, the Mountain Lion OS installed beautifully, and then Yosemite and El Capitan each went all the way. YAY!
