Hi Eric. Well...after a couple of hours, finally looks like it works. I stopped Tunnelblick and attempted to delete GoToMeeting (Citrix) which I actually wasn't using anymore. This last was a real pain. I deleted the program from Applications as usual, but somehow it managed to reappear, not in the Applications folder, but it was still there. In Spotlight I started to type : goto and there it was. I then looked into the forums to see what could be the reason why it refused to leave my Mac and found a tip (How do I remove GoToMeeting?) so I deleted all the files mentioned there. More than that, I rebooted the machine after emptying the trash. After that, back in Spotlight and there it was, again...

I double clicked on the match, just to see if it was a cached named or a real file. It started, so GoTo Meeting didn't uninstall. After two more unsuccessful attempts, i decided to use my knowledge of Unix systems and open a command line terminal. I did a sudo to root and a find like this, on the whole disk:

find / -name "*GoToMe*" -o -name "*citrix*" -o -name "*G2M*"

and then deleted everything that appeared with the Unix rm command. Then rebooted and finally GoToMeeting went away.

I then resumed my Chrome installation but the hang continued. I ran EtreCheck and clicked on Clean Up, followed the instructions to remove the orphans and like but the problem continued.

Finally, I used the find command again, this time with :

find / -name "*google*" -o -name "*Google*" -o -name "*Chrome*" -o -name "*chrome*"

and deleted everything that showed up.

Also, I had Android studio installed so I uninstalled it. Reboot and installed Chrome again. This time it works like a charm. Just in case, I started it several times and navigated to many pages with no problem.

My guess, is that some Chrome preferences did not get erased the first time, because I realized that the last install asked my for Chrome being the default browser and to send data to Google, which are the questions that it asks in a fresh install. EtreCheck helped a lot, as well as you. I'll keep it handy, just in case. Thank you very much for your assistance!

The solution is to delete Chrome and never install it again. It's a known resource hog and its real goal is to track your web usage for marketing purposes. That's what Google's business is - selling advertising information.

Once installed, there's also a tracking daemon that runs the entire time your computer is on, whether you're using Chrome or not.

Oh dear.  So embarrassing .  I discovered that me or someone had gone through and turned off mobile data for nearly all my apps in settings.  Problem solved.  (Although Safari could have told me that, rather than just saying it wasn't connected to the internet...).

Have you tried searching for the apps with Spotlight? They may be in another folder.

Are they all called Skype, as per your screenshot?

Just to add, I'd be wary of using your Mac for banking etc. until this resolved!

As far as I know, Chrome does not save passwords in the macOS Keychain.   So it is most likely using the same code on macOS as it is using on Windows.  If it is not secure on Windows, then it would not be secure on macOS.

Personally, I use 1Password on my Macs and iPhone to store my passwords.  The passwords are kept in an encrypted file on my Mac, but I sync the already encrypted file with my other Macs and my iPhone, so I always have up-to-date password information on all my systems.

There are other people that like LastPass.com as a cross platform password manager.

NOTE:  I like 1Password for more than just saving the password.  I also save things like the account security questions so I have the "Exact" spelling of my answers to each of the questions.  I store secure notes and images in 1Password.  It can contain a lot of non-password information, all kept securely encrypted.
