Can't update Photo app on my Mac

I bought my son's Macbook from him a few years ago and finally figured out (as far as I can tell) how to get myself registered as the new user.  Problem is that for some reason the Photos app asks for my son's apple ID to update it instead of my ID.  As far as I know this is the only app that is doing that.  How do I get it to be registered with my ID so it will update?

So it sounds like if I just delete the iMovie and iPhoto programs I should be good to go.

That should work, yes. As iMovie is now free, you can purchase it for yourself for free from the AppStore, after you delete iMovie. The same goes for GarageBand, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, btw.

I appears the only way to properly transfer ownership of a Mac is pretty much the same way as you would do it for a PC - slick the drive and reload.

It is worse.  This will not transfer the ownership of applications, it will just stop the Mac from pestering you with update notices, that you cannot follow up on.
