MacBook Pro doesn't play a sound upon startup or when new message arrive.

So, I've started to notice something odd happening.

In Apple Messages, the font size appears to have re-sized without instruction from me, and the sound indicating a send or received message has not played. Simultaneously, there is no sound upon start up of the machine (you know, that iconic apple sound when a Mac starts up).

Very odd.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Jim

hi,

In System Preferences > Sound choose the relevant tab and set the volume for both the Master Volume and the Sound Effects volume.

Test a Sound Effect whilst in System Preferences > Sound.

Also test iTunes.

Can you hear either of those ?

Restart the Computer using the NVRAM reset option How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

This may cause the volume to adjust between the second and third "Bongs" if you can here them.

If this still does not work check the Sound Out put is System Preferences > Sound.

If required exclude any external device that might be playing sound.

Report back.
